What is Your WalkScore? |

A new company, WalkScore.comuses mapping data about your neighborhood to determine how “walkable” your neighborhood is. You simply give it an address and it crunches the number nearby stores, restaurants, schools, and parks. The resulting number is what a “WalkScore.”
A WalkScore is a rating from 0 to 100. Unless your score is over 50, it’s not likely you’ll be walking very much. If you are in the 90+ range, expect to enjoy a great walk to nearly everything that you need.
Overall it’s a fun tool to try. I didn’t really spend too much time with it. After I put in my address and got the number, I moved on to another website. There’s not really anything else on the site that I cared about. It would be cool if Zillow integrated it into their website. Perhaps they have and I didn’t notice.
If you live in an area that’s good to walk in, you don’t need this tool to tell you. Simply get out and walk. It is good exercise. However, I try to spend more time running. I’m an impatient person with a short attention span. I figure if can run for a half hour or more, it adds more time to my day. I will have gotten my exercise done quickly and can move onto my next task… even if it’s being Lazy.

Lazy Man… I think you’re missing the rest of the article.

I’ve said this before on other blogs, the site is a cute idea but needs work to make any sense beyond some sort of hipster bragging rights. I’m a hardcore walker - I don’t even have a drivers’ licence - and walk everywhere, as do the many of my neighbours who don’t own cars. It gave my house a 48 and doesn’t consider the gym, supermarket and pubs I walk to or from several times a week even walkable! I also don’t understand why it doesn’t include proximity to subways and streetcars, which are necessary for people like me to enjoy a city without a car.

First off, very surprised it found my neighborhood since it is somewhat new (and Google can’t even find it).
And I got a nice 17 out of 100. Nothing nearby to walk to, but I usually don’t walk to stores anyway.

It gave my place a 14 which I find ironic considering I can walk to just about anything as it is within or just over a mile but they don’t consider that. That must be for like people who only want to go an 1/8 of a mile or something.
