My Health Week in Review #2 |
It’s time for a quick update on my health.
- Body Stats: I just weighed myself and it came up with 168.5lbs - a loss of 1.5lbs from last week. My Tanita scale reads 21.0% body fat - a gain of 1% more fat. My Omron handheld fat analyzer reads 16.9% - a gain of nearly 2%! The average of those two last week was 17.5% and this week it’s 19% (slightly rounded). This isn’t a good trend.
- Exercise: Using my Exercise Matrix, my 3 days of what I’d say is about a 2-level intensity exercise earns me a 12 rating of 98. The scale is weighted towards the low numbers, so 12 is actually not all that bad.
- Diet: I did a little better than last week, earning a C+. It was far perfect. Energi Gal and I got a new mattress last Sunday and I couldn’t resist the Costco pizza. I had 2 other similar slip-ups, but I also had about 3 meals that were nearly perfect - lots of vegetables, lean protein, low complex carbs, etc.

Well, you want to look at trends over time and ignore individual results in your body stats section. I don’t check my body fat percentage regularly, as I don’t have equipment for a quick and easy answer and I’m too lazy to do measurements and math. I do weigh myself daily, though, and I try to keep myself under the same conditions each day. First thing in the morning, no clothes or just underwear, after I’ve emptied the bladder, before I’ve eaten anything or done much in the way of moving around. If one day is out of whack, I don’t worry about it. If a lot of days are out of whack, I try to decide if I’m getting sick or not. Otherwise, I just follow the trend lines to see if I am gaining or losing. Since I started tracking, my weight has done a lot less swinging up and down and generally stays within a couple of pounds. I try to maintain usually rather than lose or gain, so that is a good thing.
One question that I have on the body fat calculators is how much does your water weight come into effect? If you measure yourself, and then drink 40 ounces of water over the next half hour or so and measure yourself again, will the result be the same? If not, then that would by guess for the discrepancy in body fat despite the (slight) loss in weight.
I did get measured last November for body fat. It was right where I thought it would be: 5.5%. About half that of my friend that I was running the marathon with.
