[...] Skiing/Snowboarding as ExerciseIf you have ever gone to a gym you have seen that there are workout machines there that actually mock some of the sports that people engage in for fun. The reason for this is because some of the sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and even rowing are excellent exercises, especially for the upper body. If you’re most favored sport is tennis or swimming it is likely that you will not find those types of machines at the gym but there are two good explanations for that: 1) snowboarding and skiing exercise your body in a way that other sports don’t and 2) a tennis machine might look weird unless it’s Wii Tennis.
Hey Lazy Man. Yes, kcal and cal is the same thing. And you are correct about the boxing, but that was the only sport that came close to burning 400cals/hour. Playing the other sports burned a lot less. Either way, playing Wii is a blast. It's like your exercising and don't even realize it! Enjoy!

einmotion, it was the only information that was available at the time.

I'm not big on converting Kcals there, but it seems like it's the same as a calorie. If that's true it looks like boxing is 10.2 calories a minute. That's over 600 calories an hour. In the write up it says "For instance, playing 30 minutes of Wii Boxing burns 216 calories." That sounds on pace for 400 an hour, what the other study showed.

The research you mention about Wii is hardly valid since it was financed and conducted by Nintendo. However, The American Council on Exercise, who is dedicated to promoting the benefits of physical activity and protecting consumers against unsafe and ineffective health and fitness products, programs and trends, has just published an excellent research article on caloric expenditure while playing Wii. The details can be viewed at http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/studies/WiiStudy.pdf. Although it might be a good option to keep some people moving, it’s a far cry from burning 400 cals/hour. Nonetheless, it sounds like it’s keeping you moving and you are having fun at the same time….nothing wrong with that! :)

Wii Tennis can be a great workout, agreed! It's just a shame there's no singles or tournament options in the game.

I had real high hopes for Top Spin 3 on the Wii, which came out about a week ago, thinking it would be similar to Wii Tennis but with full tournament features, lots of stats and the option to go up against Roger Federer. Alas, while all those things are present, the control mechanism is more like a standard video game - you even have to use the nunchuk to control your player - and the reviews have been mostly poor as result. What a wasted opportunity.

I'm hoping somebody realises how much fun Wii Tennis is and makes a new and improved version which goes a lot deeper - and soon! :)

Another good workout on Wii Sports is the built in fitness test. Do a couple of those back-to-back and you'll definitely feel it. :)

Try playing the baseball skill game that makes you swing the bat 30 times and the pitches come faster and faster.

I am always out of breath after that one!

Welcome to the Wii community! It's a lot of fun and wait until you get Guitar Hero (granted, not much of a workout but it's so fun), M and I play it all the time.
