This past weekend my wife and I joined a group for the Relay for Life. I have to admit that I had never heard of the event, but after Energi Gal explained it seemed like something I had to do. The idea is that for 24 hours a team of people walk around the a high school track in support of Cancer prevention and elimination. So I get to do something for charity while getting my exercise in? Count me in.
When we got to the track there were various tents set up. We quickly found our team and checked in. I was under the impression that people should be walking all the time with each team having a representative. The team captain was in the tent and there was no one walking from our team. Then I took a closer look around the track and there were about 2-3 other people walking in total. That meant that around 80% of the teams had no walkers. It didn’t seem to be much of a relay to me.
I guess it’s one thing to have limited walkers, but that left the rest of the team members who weren’t walking with nothing else to do. It seemed that the past-time was to get food delivered. There were a couple of health choices as you might expect, but there was much more fast food than anything else. As I noticed Little Caesar’s pizza, Panda Express, Kentucky Fried Chicken, etc. I couldn’t help but wonder if this event was causing more cancer than it was preventing.
We ended up walking a little more than an hour - our full commitment. I still find it odd that even though I joined at the last minute, I felt like I was contributing to the cause the most.
