Interesting Australian Exercise Study |

I am a little behind in reading Men’s Health Magazine, but I found something interesting in the June 2007 issue (page 54) worth sharing… According to an Australian study, people lost 10% of their body fat with high intensity interval training of just 20 minutes, 3 times a week. That’s great, but I thought it was more interesting that those who exercised longer, but at a lower intensity didn’t lose any body fat. The study recommends using exercise bike and going full-speed for 8 seconds and then slowing for 12. Continue this until you can build up the stamina to do a full 20 minutes. Remember, see your doctor before taking on an exercise routine - especially one with high intensity training.
There’s a lot more analysis of this study at the Burn the Fat Blog. Since I can’t find a direct link to the official study, this should push you in the right direction.

High intensity interval training has always been the best way to burn fat, but it’s a little harder than long slow mileage on a treadmill while you watch the babble box so people don’t like to take part in it.
Another great way to lose weight along the same vein is to mix HIIT with weight training, especially when you superset two exercises that hit unrelated muscle groups and stick to exercises that work more than one muscle group at a time. Alwyn Cosgrove writes about such topics frequently.

I love HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training). Apparently it keeps your metabolism elevated much longer than low-intensity work.
