Four Scales of Food Choice

Comment First

When it comes time to choose what you eat, how do you pick amongst all the foods? I weigh four factors before I make the decision:

  • Ease of Preparation - If I have to make a particular and if it’s going to be a lot of work, I’ll probably skip it. However, if it’s as easy as putting on the George Foreman grill and waiting a couple of minutes, that’s the path I’ll choose.
  • Price of Food - The Lazy Man and Money plays a big role here. I simply can’t afford to go out for prime rib every night. And even if I could afford it, I wouldn’t because…
  • Taste of Food - This is an obvious factor - and the primary factor for most people.
  • Nutritional Quality of Food - This weighs high in my decision making process and forms the center of what this site is about. Anyone can eat Ramen noodles any night, they are easy to prepare and very cheap. I even think they are pretty tasty. They aren’t particularly healthy though.

It can be very difficult to find foods that match all four of these criteria. I really try to get all four, but occasionally I have to settle for just three of them. Do you evaluate your meals on these 4 factors as well?
