Soda vs. Milk |

I’ve been following Building Nutrition, the writings of a register dietitian, Stacie. I came across this article about soda vs. milk. It’s a pretty easy slam dunk that milk wins nutritionally. However, soda may actually have a couple of advantages not mentioned in the article.
- Diet Soda - When she said that soda has 10 teaspoons of sugar, I’m assuming she means regular soda. Diet soda contains sugar substitutes instead of sugar. I’m not 100% buying that the sugar substitutes are safe, but it doesn’t have calories. In a society that overeats, one must wonder if people switched from diet soda to milk if intake even more calories. Perhaps milk would have the opposite effect and curb your appetite, but it’s hard to be sure.
- Convenience - There are a few reasons why drink more milk than soda. a) It’s not very portable. I can drink warm soda that has never been refrigerated. b) I can grab a can and go. Milk requires me to pour from a 2 liter or c) buy it in expensive travel size containers. Even in the gallon, milk is much more expensive per once than soda. d) Lastly, milk tends to expire on me while I can huge amounts of soda - it lasts nearly forever.
If you want America to drink more milk, the first step is to make more portable at a competitive price. I don’t know if we’ll see that day anytime soon.

Also worth noting is that because diet sodas have no actual sugar in them, if you accidentally spill it, it doesn’t get all sticky. It doesn’t really stain either (or if it does, it washes out easily).
Spilled milk on the other hand may give you something to cry about if you don’t get all of it up on the first try.

What about soy milk or organic milk? Horizon Organic milk does not need to be refrigerated AND it helps you meet your calcium and protein needs. Food for thought…

I’ve never tried soy milk, but other soy products don’t agree with me. You’d know more about soy than me, but I’ve read it can have some negative effects on testosterone. The combination doesn’t make me want to run to it. I’ll look at Horizon Organic milk.
Cost will be a factor in whether they make the cut into my life.
