I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day weekend. I’ve spend some time doing a little writing, watching the Red Sox, and swimming. One of the things that attracted me to my current apartment complex as the heated outdoor pool. I grew up with a pool in Boston, but the weather kept the pool too cool for swimming most of the time. The result was that I rarely went swimming.
Nowadays, I try to get as much swimming in as I can. It’s a tremendously healthy exercise. From the data at Cool Nurse, it burns 120-130 calories per ten minutes. It has two benefits over some other exercises that are often overlooked. For one it’s very easy on your joints. There’s not pounding of pavement as you’d have in running. You don’t run much of a risk of injury as you would with football or basketball. The second is that it’s amazingly refreshing. There’s no sweating. Instead of your body getting so hot that it feels like it’s on fire, it remains a nice normal temperature.
Give swimming a try, especially if you’ve been going to those Memorial Day BBQs.

Swimming is a great cross training activity. I try to get to the pool at least once a week during lunch.

I totally agree with your post about swimming being such a great exercise (as I was a competitive swimmer for many years). However, I do have to disagree with your comment, “There’s no sweating. Instead of your body getting so hot that it feels like it’s on fire, it remains a nice normal temperature.” Your body temperature is being regulated by the water around it, which is why you remain cool. You do sweat…quite a bit. I think this is an important point to note because your readers may neglect staying hydrated during an aquatic workout.

That’s an excellent point. I guess I’ve never swam for such lengths to build up a thirst. I am also under the impression that sweat is the body’s way of regulating temperature. Along those lines I figured that it wouldn’t be necessary and the body wouldn’t sweat.
