Beer Diet: A great a way lose weight?

If you read yesterday’s post on beer as a healthy drink and today’s title you’d realize that I have beer on my mind this week. If you are a Red Sox fan, this should come as no surprise.

Let’s take a step back from beer and start at the very beginning. Quite a few years ago, I read an interesting article in Men’s Health. For years I have subscribed and I must have read thousands of articles. However this one sticks out more than the others. You might remember it as the submarine sandwich article. The idea was how one person lost a ton of weight only eating submarine sandwiches. It sounds insane, but today it makes total sense. The person was Jared Fogle and he ate Subway subs. Unless you’ve been on Mars over the last ten years, you’ve heard something about the story or have seen a commercial telling his tale.

Why do I remember this article? Because I believe it to be the second best idea of the 3 or 4 unusual diet ideas that they presented. The idea that got all the television marketing is the one that everyone knows about. What they don’t know about is the beer diet.

What is the beer diet and how does it work? The person profiled realized that he liked beer and didn’t want to give it up in his diet. Rather than fight what was firmly reinforced in his mind, he used it as a tool. Specifically he set up a reward system. As long as he ate healthy during the day, he allowed himself a beer at the end of the day. As unhealthy eating choices presented themselves during the day, he would pass knowing that the beer would taste that much better that evening. I think it’s an amazing way to use psychology for you rather than against you.

As you think about that, remember that light beer can be a part of many low-carb diets.

You could even brew your own beer, and get the exercise of man-handling gallons of beer at a time, and the psychological satisfaction of knowing that you created what you are drinking. And you will also learn patience, unless you don’t want beer that tastes good…

There is an American guy who ate/drank nothing but guinness for a week. He made a TV show about it, and physically was fine after seven days. You can google his site - the guinness diet. But I do agree with your second to last paragraph. You only live once. If you eat realtively clean, and work out with care, and exert yourself outside the gym, you deserve a reward. For some people it’s pizza, others ice cream, for me and probably many others it’s beer, and the associated pub culture and craic.

Eating a single food item is not a right solution for your body. Right diet means it’s a combination of all required nutrition in daily food. Diet4idiots is offering such a right diet.
